About Us
The Antonine Friendship Link was established following a conference in Falkirk in 2003 organised by Scottish Friends of Palestine. The theme of the conference was Israel's apartheid wall, and its devastating effects -dividing the adjacent rural and urban Palestinian communities in the West Bank. The conference was well attended by the local community, and there was a clear desire for a local initiative to take forward from the conference.
Falkirk was chosen as the venue because of the proximity of the remains of the Antonine Wall, a Roman wall which once crossed Scotland - a wall whose remains demonstrates the futility of military occupation and wall building. Read about our shared history of military occupation.
After further discussion and meetings, a link was established with the West Bank village of Jayyous. Jayyous was chosen as the Palestinian 'link' because of the devastation caused to the community by the wall. Until recently, it was a thriving farming community, but now the Israeli Wall is strangling the local economy, cutting off villagers from their land, crops, olive trees, grazing grounds and water aquifiers.
The Link works to raise public awareness of these issues, through meetings, events and fund raising, it serves both to highlight the futility of wall building and helps to focus on a part of the world crying out for peace, not war. For one Palestinian community at least, it will help bring hope, by letting them know that the world has not forgotten them.
Our constitution can be found here.
